What Makes Magnolia Different? 8 Reasons to Choose Our Miami Birth Center
Have you decided you want to deliver at a birth center in Miami? We know you have many options for maternity care in South Florida. At Magnolia Birth House in North Miami Beach, we stand out with our gentle approach to family-centered midwifery care.
What makes Magnolia unique? From a culturally competent team to long appointments with our compassionate midwives, Magnolia is here to offer you a holistic experience throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum. In this blog, we’re covering eight ways that Magnolia is different from mainstream obstetric offices and even other birth centers.
8 Ways Magnolia Stands Out in Miami Birth Center Care
Diversity of Staff
Our team is culturally competent, meaning we provide high-quality care to people with diverse lived experiences, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. This way of practicing acknowledges the importance of culture and adapts to meet the needs of our community.
In addition, the Magnolia staff has been trained extensively on equity and inclusion practices. Birth equity is foundational to how we operate at Magnolia. We are committed to supporting people of all races, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations, gender identities, and socioeconomic statuses. Plus, our birth center team looks like our community. We’re training the next generation of midwives, and all of our student midwives are Black.
Wrap-Around Services
As a midwifery practice, we believe in holistic care. We physically wrap our arms around our clients, but we also support you emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. How do we provide these wrap-around services?
We encourage you to have a doula, and we are happy to suggest local doulas. It’s important to find a doula who is culturally matched to you.
We embed mental health support into your care by frequently assessing your mental health during prenatal and postpartum appointments. We make referrals when necessary.
We offer nutrition evaluation, consultation, and support. Our wellness educator is available to all clients who need help with dietary changes or challenges.
We use technology that allows clients to reach out. In addition to our patient portal that contains informational resources and videos, our dynamic communication tools allow you to interact with our team via text message.
Relationship Building
While the schedule we follow and many of the clinical tasks we perform are the same as what you would find in mainstream obstetric practices, one of the biggest differences between the medical model of obstetric care and the midwifery model of care is connection.
When you enter into our prenatal care, we spend time getting to know you, building a trusting relationship with you. A key to relationship building is longer prenatal appointments. In fact, during every prenatal visit at Magnolia, we dedicate 30-45 minutes for discussion. We want you to feel free to ask questions and discuss options without feeling rushed.
WATER BIRTHing services
At Magnolia, we believe in empowering mothers with choices that align with their birthing vision. For many, a water birth is a serene and natural method that resonates deeply with their holistic approach to childbirth. Here's why the water birth option at Magnolia stands out:
Natural Comfort: The warm waters of a birthing pool are known to provide significant pain relief during labor, allowing the mother's muscles to relax and facilitating a smoother dilation of the cervix.
Seamless Transition for Baby: Babies born into water experience a gentler transition from the womb, as the warm water mirrors the familiar environment of the amniotic sac.
Flexibility in Movement: The buoyancy of the water allows mothers to adjust their position more easily, often helping the baby to descend in an optimal position for birth.
Calm and Serene Environment: The tranquility of a water birth setting often helps in reducing stress hormones, promoting a peaceful birthing experience for both mother and child.
Expertly Guided: Our skilled midwives at Magnolia are experienced in guiding water births, ensuring safety, and providing a supportive environment throughout the process.
Offering water birth services further underscores our commitment to providing holistic, family-centered care. Like every other aspect of our services, we prioritize the well-being, comfort, and autonomy of our birthing families, ensuring they have an empowering and memorable birthing experience at Magnolia.

Childbirth Education
In South Florida, some common worries for local expectant parents are:
Hospitals’ high C-section rates, which are about 50 percent
Poor maternal health outcomes for Black women
Low rates of breastfeeding
Along with our sister company, The Gathering Place, we are attuned to and focused on addressing these concerns specifically. One way we do this is through childbirth education. Courses through The Gathering Place cover how to prepare for out-of-hospital birth, how to build confidence in the childbirth process, and how to educate yourself and your family about lactation.
Lactation Support
In Miami, the breastfeeding rate six months after birth is 9 percent. That is a staggering low number, compared to our six-month breastfeeding rate of 75 percent among Magnolia clients. How are we able to help families achieve their lactation goals? We integrate lactation experts into our care team!
After you give birth at Magnolia, you are entitled to one complimentary visit with one of our International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs), who are available for virtual or in-office visits. They can help you with support for positioning and proper latch, milk supply, engorgement, breast pain, sore nipples, infant weight gain concerns, breast pump education, and preparation for going back to work.
Client Care Coordination
At Magnolia, we have an individual who is dedicated to meeting the needs of our clients. That person is our client care coordinator, a nurse who reviews intake forms and helps our Miami midwives be as prepared as possible for office appointments. Many of our expectant parents interact with and rely on the client care coordinator because she helps with answering phones, scheduling appointments, obtaining past medical records, providing a medical note to go back to work, and checking in with clients to make sure everything is going well.
Plus, she coordinates referrals for clients who need to see specialists, like maternal fetal medicine or hematology. She makes sure that gap is closed by connecting clients with other healthcare experts in our community. This client coordination is embedded with our other points of care, providing a comprehensive approach to our holistic care.
Environmental Consciousness
Our team is committed to doing its part in reducing waste and taking care of the environment. When buying products we need at the birth center, we purchase biodegradable plates and cups; Reel toilet paper and paper towels, which are tree-free; environmentally friendly cleaning supplies; and organic linens. In addition, we participate in composting and recycling.
‘Our House is Your House’
Every time you come to Magnolia — whether it’s for a prenatal visit, the birth of your baby, or a postpartum appointment — we want you to feel welcome. We’ve worked really hard to create a home-like environment with cozy, inviting surroundings. We hope you’ll treat the birth center like a home away from home. That’s why we ask everyone who enters to take off their shoes. It's an intentional choice to create a comfortable atmosphere.
